In the absence of the new iPhone 5, the Apple device left to go head to head with the popular Samsung Galaxy S3 is the iPhone 4S. Despite being launched in October 2011 this model still offers some great specification that helps to make it one of the best phones around. We see how the 4S and the S3 compare in terms of screen quality and design.
The iPhone 4S features the renowned Retina Display, the screen that has set the benchmark for other mobile displays to aspire to. The name of this screen derives from the fact that it boasts a superb pixel density of 330 pixels per inch which goes beyond what our own eyes can detect. Part of the reason behind this excellent quality is the fact that the screen is relatively small at just 3.5 inches and also the fact that it offers a very high resolution of 960 x 640 pixels. The screen makes use of LED backlit technology which produce a great natural depth and superb colours. The new Samsung Galaxy S3 uses a much larger screen than the 4S. This 4.8 inch display is one of the biggest screens around and makes great use of Super AMOLED technology to produce great colours and naturally dark tones. In terms of resolution a mammoth 1280 x 720 pixels is on offer but when this is combined with the large screen size the resulting pixel density is lower than the 4S at 306PPI. Both of these models are fairly evenly matched in this area and the consumers will either opt for the more compact and slightly better 4S or the larger S3 which is great for gaming and web browsing.
Despite being one of the oldest smartphones around the iPhone 4S still boasts a stylish and unusual design which eclipses what many of its competitors can offer, including the Galaxy S3. The Apple phone takes the unusual step of using a glass body on the phone. This looks superb with two sheets making up the front and rear panels of the phone. An aluminium strip is the filling in this glass sandwich. The phone is also one of the smallest around measuring just 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm. This contrasts well with the quite substantial weight of 140 grammes which make the phone feel premium and well built. The Galaxy S3 is the larger handset with dimensions of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm but with a lighter weight of just 133 grammes, mainly thanks to the extensive use of plastic in its construction. Samsung have decided to use a more curved design on this model rather than the more angular body found on the Galaxy S2. This looks nice but only makes the model look similar to countless other models, unlike the 4S which stands out against its rivals.
The Apple iPhone 4S remains as one of the very best phone around despite its advancing age. It certainly competes well against the new Galaxy S3 and matches the Samsung for screen technology and beats it with its still stylish glass design.
